Has Emerson Palmieri become West Ham’s Mr Reliable?

By Roshane Thomas

It is a friendship that was forged in Lyon, a bond that extends deeper than football and a partnership that is yielding success down the left flank at West Ham United.

Left-back Emerson Palmieri and Lucas Paqueta, the playmaker, are an offensive pair that work brilliantly in tandem. Whenever one is absent, the other struggles to adjust.

Emerson has been in excellent form this season, scoring one goal and registering three assists across 35 appearances while continuing to improve defensively.

The 29-year-old’s link-up play with Paqueta has stood out. Emerson to Paqueta (208) and Paqueta to Emerson (187) are the most passes between any West Ham players this season.

Emerson has played over 50 more passes to Paqueta than he has to any other team-mate, while Emerson and Paqueta have combined to create five chances, with the left-back only combining with Mohammed Kudus to create more (six).

Defensively, Emerson ranks first (78) among full-backs in the Premier League for tackles this season. Tyrick Mitchell, with 72, is second, followed by Antonee Robinson (69), Pedro Porro (67) and Destiny Udogie (61). Emerson is also in the top 10 for interceptions made, with 31.

Emerson’s stunning strike in the 4-2 victory against Brentford, which has been nominated for the Premier League’s goal of the month, was a reminder of his offensive attributes.

Since joining from Chelsea for £13million ($16.6m) in August 2022 on a four-year deal with the option of a further year, he has scored three goals and provided five assists in 69 appearances in all competitions.

The Brazil-born Italy international has developed into the first-choice left-back under manager David Moyes. In an interview with The Athletic in September, Emerson referred to Moyes as a father figure and thanked him for getting the best out of him.

“Since the Conference League final, he’s arguably been one of our best players, if not our best player,” said Moyes. “People will think about other players but Emerson‘s performances have been really good. Maybe it dropped off a little bit over the last month with Paqueta being injured. But people will remember Emerson‘s goal (against Brentford). Not bad for a full-back.

“We’ve been very impressed (with their partnership) for most of the season. Lucas was a big miss for us, but getting him back has been great and I think it’s benefited Emerson’s performances as well. Both of them have done really well.”

When Paqueta was sidelined for seven weeks with a calf injury, Emerson’s form did drop and West Ham failed to win in eight games before the Brentford success.

It was hard for the defender to develop the same understanding with Kudus. Paqueta does not shy away from defensive responsibilities, while Kudus’ playing style is different. Paqueta’s touch map against Brentford showed he is capable of relieving defensive pressure on Emerson. Kudus’ touches in the defeat away to Nottingham Forest showed he has a preference to remain further afield and left Emerson exposed.

“Emerson is a very good player, a top player, and I’m very happy to play with him because he understands me and he knows me and, when I have the ball, I understand him,” said Paqueta. “It’s so easy to play with him.”

Paqueta, who has been included in Brazil’s squad for forthcoming matches against England and Spain, played with Emerson at French side Lyon in 2021-22. The full-back was on West Ham’s radar when members of Moyes’ backroom staff scouted Lyon ahead of their Europa League tie in April 2022. But it was Paqueta’s performances that alerted them which culminated in the player joining that summer in a deal worth €60million (£51m).

It was his assist that led to Jarrod Bowen’s winner in the UEFA Conference League final against Fiorentina. The duo were at the heart of the post-match celebrations and will aim to impress in Europe once more ahead of the Europa League last-16 tie against Freiburg.

“Lucas is a fantastic player and a key part of the squad,” said James Ward-Prowse. “Him just being on the training pitch gives everyone a lift. He’s a typical Brazilian player: he likes to enjoy himself on the pitch, and he’s a great influence on all of us.”

Emerson and Paqueta’s journey to West Ham has not been straightforward. Paqueta was almost a lost jewel at his boyhood club Flamengo and later endured difficulties at AC Milan. He was the subject of interest from Manchester City last summer and will continue to have many suitors.

Emerson never got a chance to shine at Chelsea but has thrived under the tutelage of Moyes and his coaching staff. His first season at the London Stadium was stop-start as he battled with stalwart Aaron Cresswell for a starting place.

But since ousting Cresswell in the second half of last season, he has made the position his own.
